How would you answer this question?
“What is God like?”
What is the basis for your answer?
I am reading A.W. Tozer’s The Attributes of God. In the second chapter Tozer says,”The man who has found real faith rather than nominal faith has found a right answer to the question, “What is God like?”
So I ask, and really hope you will respond…
I love this question and will attempt to share an answer. First of all I must say, God is huge and complex, more than our human minds can comprehend but I do believe we were made to be in relationship and KNOW him through his son Jesus Christ. I believe the bible has all the answers to any question for life and this answer can onlly be answered by the bible and not by our opinions or feelings or thoughts. The bible is all about God from beginning to end so there is so much more than what is posted here.
Who is God? This is what he says to that question
“I am the Lord, there is no other; apart from me there is no God… I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form the light and create the darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things.” (Is 45:5,7)
“I, the Lord, speak truth; I declare what is right.” (Is 45:19b)
Who is God?
I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” (Is 46:4)
“I will not yield my glory to another.” (Is 47:11)
“I am the first and the last. My own hand laid the foundation of the earth.” (Is 47:13)
Who is God?
For the Lord comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.
Those who hope in him will not be disappointed. (Is 49)
My unfailing love for you will not be shaken. (Is 54)
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways,” declares the Lord. (Is 55:8)
Who is God?
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is , and is to come.” (Rev 4:8)
It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Heb 10:31)
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. (Gal 6:7)
“No one can see me and live.” (Ex 33:20)
Who is God?
God is love. (1 John 4)
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we shoulod be called children of God! (1 Jn)
And we know that he hears us- whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him. (1 Jn 5:15)
Who is God?
He is a refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. (Ps 46)
He is our guide to the end (ps 48:14)
He is my joy and my delight (Ps 43:4)
For you, Lord, have NEVER forsaken those who seek you. (Ps 9:10)
I could go on and on. This is only the tip of the iceberg. He is a God of absolutes, extremes. We were created to know him and enjoy him. We were created for Him. It is all about Him.
I hope you don’t mind my thoughts…
When I’m asked about “what God is like to me” the first thing that comes to my mind is “Loving Father.” My own father lacked experience in this area… so when I was first introduced to God the Father, I wasn’t that impressed… “so what does that mean to me?” I wondered… my father was unavailable, an alcoholic, I barely knew… “If this was God, was I suppose to be excited about this?”
As my relationship grew and the God began to reveal Himself to me, I learned that God the Father was better then a dream… A God that I am so deeply in love with now. As I continue to spend time with Him I learn that there are other sides to Him too… The one I didn’t expect was God has a sense of humor… after I discovered that truth, it made sense, I mean He did make laughter… but the first time He made a joke with me I was stunned… now I just laugh… it’s another side to God that allows me to draw near to Him.
He is our God of all strength and all power… “GOD IS A LION!” He is our Creator, He supplies us strength and gives us mercy when we need them. He is all amazing, all loving, all beauty, above all. He is the beginning and He is the end.
When I am asked about “what is God like to me” I remember my conversation with Him just yesterday… He said to me, “Martine, I stand in the doorway waiting for you to come spend time with me. I want to be with you. I love you. You allow yourself to get distracted by things that don’t matter… you look to other things that you enjoy to fill you up, but I am standing here ready to fill you up. I have great plans for you, my child, abundant blessings… but you will not know them if you do not spend time with me. How will you know the path I have for you if you are not around to hear.”
God is relationship. He wants all of us to make DAILY time with Him. And how great a God is He that He desires to be near us and have relationships with us when we are just sinners and He is So Great and So Holy.
God to me is my Daddy. He has all the answers and gives them freely.
To respond to what God is like requires a mighty answer which I am not sure I could do justice to.
To get a glimpse of what He is like seems more approachable. And, in doing this, I look to God’s love.
God’s love is like the ocean: vast and deep, beautiful and capable of destruction.
God’s love is unexplainable, but one can totally feel it and know it, as when walking into the ocean – being surrounded by it, swimming through it and wise as to your ways.
Jewish mystics believe that our universe has 10 dimensions in it; quantum physics suggests as many as 26. How many ever there are, I believe God embodies all of them.
and so when I, a four-dimensional creature who only really understands three of my dimensions, try to comprehend a God who embodies so many more, I am awestruck and overwhelmed.
but as Karin talked about, we lucked out. God knew that we couldn’t possibly begin understanding Him on His level, so He authored and sent the Holy Scriptures to us, to begin educating us.
And so when I see His Names in the Scriptures like Attiq Yom (Ancient of Days) and Adonay (Master), I go to my knees in wonder of His power. And when I hear His Names of Yasha’ (my Deliverer) and El Chayay (God of my life), I cry in wonder of His love.
and what’s so exciting for me, for as much as I’ve got to learn about Him over the past 35 years, it is but a sliver of Who He is, and some day in the future, our King will return, and we will begin an eternity of eternities to get to know Him fully, which is exactly how long it’s going to take.
So what is God like to me? He is my loving Father, my returning, noble King and my gentle but strong Counselor. He is everything to me.
I love these answers. Thanks so much for taking the time to write out your thoughts. Today I read Tozer’s description, God is in erverything, around everything, above everything, under everything, all things are in Him. This is amazing. Psalm 139!
